Is the California DMV Test an Open-Book Test?

Open-book exams allow you to take notes, texts, or resource materials in an exam situation. The California knowledge test is not an open-book exam. All use of testing aids is strictly prohibited, including, but not limited to, the California Driver Handbook, cheat sheets, or electronic communication devices such as cell phones, hand-held computers, etc.

Turn off your phone, and don’t try to take pictures of exam questions with your phone!

Suppose a clerk catches you using your phone or any testing aid during the knowledge test. In that case, they will mark your exam as a failure. DMV may act or postpone your possibility of earning a driving privilege.

What Happens if You Fail the Test?

DMV will email the result from an MVProctor test within 24 hours. After a failure, you will get a link to retake the test. You have two chances to take the MVProctor test from home. If you don’t pass the second attempt, you must retake the test in person at a DMV office.

A re-test may be subject to availability, which means you might have to wait several days.

To avoid this, you should prepare well to be able to pass the first time.

What is the Best Way to Prepare for the California DMV Test?

You will only pass the knowledge examination with a good understanding of California laws and rules of the road.

Let’s start by getting the latest version of the California Driver Handbook. The handbook is available at all DMV service centers but also online. By downloading a PDF version from www.dmv.ca.gov you can have the handbook ready on your phone, tablet, or computer. Studying the guide and referring to it when you need to check up on specific questions becomes more manageable.

After reading the handbook, you are ready to verify what you have learned.

Practice tests are an easy way to get familiar with DMV questions and answers, and they will also give you a good idea about your level of readiness.

Try to reach a 100% score on each practice test. It gives you some margins when you take the actual exam.

Good Luck.
